ABOUT ME

My name is Lee Witherell, the founder of VisceralFit.

I began my fitness journey in martial arts over 30 years ago, practising first Karate and then incorporating Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu into my regime.

However, like many people I gradually dropped out of regular training as career and family started to take up all of my free time.

Then, in my mid 40s I began to experience some issues with my mental health; I found that exercising was a really good way to elevate my mood and reduce my stress levels.

I returned to training in martial arts and, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced us into lockdown, I took advantage of the additional free-time to study and qualify as a Level 3 Personal Trainer.

In my work with clients I've developed a greater awareness of how regular exercise can positively impact the health and quality of life of everyone, but particularly older adults.

And so I founded VisceralFit, to share the benefits of regular exercise with a wider community.

The impact on my life has been 100% positive; get in touch and see if we can do the same for you.

THE BENEFITS OF REGULAR EXERCISE

“The current human genome has not changed in over 45,000 years…..(it) requires, and expects, us to be highly physically active for normal functioning.” *

Despite the massive advances in technology since the industrial revolution, we inhabit the same physiology as our prehistoric hunter-gatherer ancestors.

However, our environment has changed significantly; rather than moving lots and having periods of feast and famine, the average person now moves a lot less and has food available on every street corner – much of which didn’t even exist 50 years ago!

We’re pretty much betraying our genome by living a life it’s not cut out for! By way of comparison, the average office worker takes between 3,000 and 5,000 steps per day, whereas the Amish community (who shun cars and lead traditional lifestyles) take 18,000 to 22,00 steps per day – very similar to hunter-gatherers! **

What we now understand is the biological consequences of being sedentary – it has a very negative effect on our gene expression and can increase our risk of chronic diseases dramatically, as well as negatively affecting mental health. Exercise increases expression of protective genes, whereas being sedentary and chronically stressed shuts down expression of protective genes and increases expression of damaging ones.

Add in the factors of office-based work and the proliferation of screen-based technology and you can see why the WHO now considers obesity a pandemic, on a par with COVID-19.

Therefore, there has never been a better time to start a regular exercise program, and enjoy the following benefits:

  1. Physical Health: Regular exercise is essential for maintaining good physical health and reduces the risk of developing chronic health conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Our bodies are designed to perform functional movements such as squatting, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and twisting. VisceralFit’s programs incorporate these movements into your exercise routine to improve functional fitness and enhance your body's natural abilities. This can involve activities such as weightlifting, bodyweight exercises and yoga.

  2. Mental Well-being: Exercise has been proven to have a positive impact on mental health; taking a break from the office environment to exercise can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Physical activity stimulates the release of endorphins, which are often referred to as "feel-good" hormones, promoting a sense of well-being and improving mood. Exercise also helps improve cognitive function, including memory and concentration, which can enhance productivity and creativity.

  3. Stress Relief: Physical activity helps reduce cortisol, the stress hormone, and promotes the production of serotonin, which can help improve mood and relaxation. This can lead to a more focused and calmer mindset. The social element of group classes also helps to strengthen human connection, another way to reduce stress.

  4. Spending Time Outdoors: Our bodies are adapted to thrive in natural environments, so spending time outdoors can provide numerous benefits. Exposure to natural light, fresh air, and nature can help regulate our circadian rhythms, reduce stress, boost mood, and support overall well-being.

In a world where complexity and distractions abound, VisceralFit offers a refreshing approach to health and fitness. We believe that getting back to basics, stripping away the unnecessary, and embracing the authenticity of real life is the key to achieving true wellness.
